PROJECT SPACE

România a trecut de la un sistem totalitar în care nu exista nici un fel de spaţiu pentru o dezbatere critică, la un sistem în care părem să ne cedăm de bunăvoie dreptul de a judeca critic nedreptăţile din jur şi în care părem să consimţim la un alt fel de dominaţie, însoţită de o creştere a naţionalismului, rasismului şi sexismului, care au existat în forme mai ascunse şi înainte de 1989, dar care acum sunt arătate şi promovate în mod deschis. Toate acestea în cadrul unei economii de piaţă care permează toate aspectele vieţii.

Evenimentele din cadrul proiectului au adus în prim plan oameni, atitudini, acţiuni care depăşesc o situaţie constrângătoare sau neprielnică, oameni care îşi asumă responsabilitatea şi înţeleg că depinde de ei să schimbe ceva, iniţiative care au în comun lupta împotriva autorităţii şi disponibilitatea de a-şi asuma riscuri, care încearcă să creeze condiţiile pentru a gândi diferit.

Programul spaţiului este structurat pe aceste patru module:

POSTCOMUNISM

Evenimentele din acest modul se referă la felul în care putem analiza trecutul şi prezentul, construind spaţii libere în care putem fi critici şi putem influenţa realitatea. Este important să se arate cu claritate ce a însemnat cu adevărat comunismul în România, dar, de asemenea, este important să fim conştienţi că de multe ori critica comunismului este folosită pentru a justifica poziţii conservatoare, naţionaliste, xenofobe, sexiste, etc şi pentru a arăta că drumul pe care este acum România este singura alternativă posibilă.

FEMINISM

Evenimentele din acest modul se referă la necesitatea de a contura şi de a declara public poziţii feministe, într-un context în care în revistele pentru femei, în emisiunile de la televizor, în viaţa de zi cu zi este promovată aproape exclusiv o imagine stereotipică despre femei şi în condiţiile în care cultura majoritară şi toate aspectele vieţii sunt privite dintr-un punct de vedere masculin şi heterosexual.

EDUCAŢIE

Evenimentele din acest modul se referă la o educaţie care să nu se bazeze pe competiţie ci pe colaborare, la moduri de împărtăşire a cunoaşterii care să nu fie ierarhice, la strategii de învăţare care să determine conştientizarea faptului că felul în care construim realitatea depinde de noi.

DISPLAY

Evenimentele din acest modul se referă la felul în care ideologiile dominante devin manifeste în spaţiul public (al oraşului, în mass-media, în felul în care sunt organizate instituţiile, în imaginea acestora) , dar şi la felurile în care se creează locuri care se sustrag dominaţiei ideologice, în care oamenii îşi exercită dreptul de a pune în discuţie lucrurile, de a gândi critic, locuri în care rămâne deschisă posibilitatea de a alege altceva.

Prezentările, discuţiile, atelierele, performance-urile care au avut loc la Project Space s-au referit la una sau mai multe dintre aceste patru teme.

PROJECT SPACE

Romania transitioned from a totalitarian system, that did not allow any critical debate, to a system in which the right to critically judge the injustices around us is willingly surrendered and in which we seem to consent to another form of domination, one accompanied by the rise of nationalism, racism and sexism (all of which also existed in more concealed forms before 1989 but which are now openly revealed and promoted). These developments took place against the background of an all-encompassing market economy that permeates every aspect of life in Romania.

The events that took place as part of the Project Space brought forward people, attitudes, actions that overcome constraining situations; people who take responsibility and who consider that it is up to them to make a change; different initiatives that have in common their struggle against authority, their willingness to take risks, and their attempt to create the conditions necessary to think differently.

The program of the space will be structured around four modules: post-communism, feminism, education and display.

Post-communism: The events in this module refer to ways of analysing the past and the present while constructing free spaces from where we can influence reality. It is important to clearly show what communism really meant in Romania but it is also important to be conscious of the fact that in many cases, the critique of communism is used to validate conservative, nationalist and sexist positions, and also to claim that the path Romania is on now is the only possible alternative.

Feminism: This module’s events refer to the necessity to shape and publicly declare feminist positions in a context where every aspect of daily life (the mass media, the public and private sphere, etc) is saturated, almost exclusively, by stereotypical images of women: the self-sacrificing woman; the devoted wife and mother; the sexual object; the victim. This is a reflection of a culture and society dominated by a heterosexual male view that refuses to acknowledge any other perspective.

Education: The events in this module try to conceive a type of education that would not be based on competition but on collaboration, where the sharing of knowledge would not be hierarchical, and where learning strategies would generate new ways of perceiving and constructing our reality.

Display: The events from this module reveal ways in which dominant ideologies become manifest in the public space (in the city, in the media, in institutional organization and their public image) and also ways in which pockets of resistance to the dominant discourse are created, spaces where people can exercise their right to question and think critically, places where the possibility to choose differently remains open.

The presentations, discussions, workshops, performances that took place at Project Space tackled at least one of these four subjects.

Spaţiul

Spaţiul a avut diferite funcţii.

A fost un spaţiu semi-privat, biroul nostru în care am lucrat în fiecare zi, pregătind evenimentele următoare, scriind email-uri, lucrând pentru alte proiecte legate de Project Space, etc. Un loc pentru lucru, pentru discuţii, pentru timp petrecut împreună pentru mâncat şi băut cafea, pentru joaca cu pisicile, pentru făcut planuri de viitor şi locul unde ne întâlneam cu oameni (prieteni care treceau pe-acolo să bea o cafea, oameni de pe stradă care intrau curioşi să vadă ce se întâmplă în spaţiu, oameni interesaţi de proiect care doreau să afle mai multe detalii, oameni care veneau să citească sau să se uite la filmele din arhive, etc).

A fost un spaţiu semi-public în timpul atelierelor, deschise publicului dar importante şi prezente mai ales pentru cei implicaţi în ele.

Pentru unele evenimente am părăsit Project Space şi am ieşit în spaţiul public al oraşului, încercând să facem o foarte mică, foarte discretă şi foarte temporară intervenţie în ritmul imensului Bucureşti, o pauză de o micro secundă în pulsul acestui oraş ciudat în care poţi vedea aşa de clar cum grandioasa utopie/distopie socialistă este fundalul pentru capitalismul atotcuprinzător.

The space

The space had different functions.

It was a semi-private space, our office in which we worked every day, preparing the next events, writing emails, working for some side –projects, etc. A place for working, talking, hanging around, eating, playing with the cats, making plans for the future, and the place where people dropped by (friends just willing to take a coffee with us, people from the street curious to see what’s going on there, people interested in the project wanting to find out more details about it, people wanting to read things from the archives, etc).

It was a semi- public space during the different workshops, that were open for the public but, which were the most important and present for the people actually involved in the workshops.

It was a public space during the presentations, discussions and performances.

For some events we left the rooms and we went outside in the public space of the city, trying to make a very small, very discrete and very temporary intervention in the pace of huge Bucharest, a one micro second brake in the rhythm of this strange city were you can so clearly see how the grandiose socialist utopia/distopia is a background for the all-encompassing capitalism.

Violenţa sexuală în vremuri de război sau criză politică. Alexandra Geisler (Berlin)

„Gândeşte global, acţionează local!” este titlul unei serii de evenimente realizate de un grup de voluntari care desfăşoară proiecte sociale alternative, promovând gândirea critică şi modele de auto organizare. Acest grup propune o acţiune directă împotriva diferitelor forme de discriminare (sexism, rasism, xenofobie, antisemitism, homofobie), împotriva autoritarismului şi a organizării ierarhice a societăţii.
Evenimentele care s-au concretizat în ateliere, screening-uri, acţiuni şi prezentări au propus, în afară de analiză, ideea că iniţiativa de a pune în discuţie şi apoi de a schimba lucrurile injuste poate fi la îndemâna oricăruia dintre noi. Pe toata durata evenimentului au fost disponibile publicaţii do it yourself (printre care şi o mini-colecţie de fanzine muzicale româneşti), diverse accesorii contraculturale, precum şi materiale informative gratuite.

„Think global, act local!” is the title of a series of events realized by a group of volunteers who develop alternative social projects, promoting critical thinking and models of self-organization. This group is proposing a direct action against different forms of discrimination (sexism, racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, homophobia), against authoritarianism and against hierarchical order in society.

The workshops, screenings, actions and presentations that took place under this title whish to propose the idea that it is up to each of us to question and change the injustices surrounding us. During the events, DIY publications were available for the public (among them also a small collection of Romanian music fanzines), different counter cultural accessories and other free information materials.

Zilele „Loc pentru idei “ au fost rezervate pentru crearea unor momente de interacţiune între participanţi, în care cei interesaţi au putut propune întâlniri şi acţiuni legate de subiecte relaţionate la temele care au structurat programul evenimentelor din Project Space (postcomunism, feminism, educaţie, display), toate acestea fiind o reflecţie a lucrurilor desfăşurate în spaţiu şi a diferitelor asocieri şi colaborări între cei implicaţi.

The days called “Space for ideas” were reserved for the creation of some moments of interactions between the participants, moments when the interested people could propose meetings and actions related to the four themes of the program of events (post-communism, feminism, education, display), all these being a reflection of the discussions and of the different associations and collaborations between the people and groups involved in the whole project.

Cafeneaua Eu, tu... şi mai cine? organizată de către Asociaţia ACCEPT.

Cafeneaua „Eu, tu…şi mai cine?” organizată de către ACCEPT a dat ocazia pentru conversaţii individuale care să pună în discuţie ideile preconcepute legate de diferenţele dintre noi.

A putut fi consultată, de asemenea, o arhivă publică/personală despre subiecte legate de comunitatea LGBT.

Asociaţia ACCEPT este prima organizaţie neguvernamentală de drepturile omului din România care apără şi promovează drepturile LGBT (lesbiene, gay, bisexuali, persoane transgender) la nivel naţional.

Cafe Me, you...and who else? organized by ACCEPT Association.

The Café “Me, you… and who else?” organized by ACCEPT Association gave the opportunity for individual conversation to take place that would hopefully question the existing preconceived ideas about differences between people.

Also, a public/personal archive on LGBT issues was available.

The ACCEPT Association is the first non-governmental organization of human rights from Romania which protects and promotes the rights of LGBT persons at national level.

La lucru... Spaţii libere temporare– Reni Hofmüller

Spatii eliberate temporar de Reni- interventie in oraş.

Poliphonic Orchestra- performance.

Aproprierea ca tehnică artistică cu o bază politică – prezentare

Locuri importante pentru o istorie a femeilor.

Discuţiile, prezentările si performance-rile care au avut loc în decursul celor patru zile sub titlul „La lucru... Spaţii libere temporare” au avut subiecte ca: nevoia creării unor spaţii eliberate de ideologia profitului, importanţa unei atitudini conştiente de semnificaţia politică a gesturilor de fiecare zi, relaţia dintre gen şi tehnologie, femeile ca producătoare de conţinut în domeniul culturii şi tehnologiei, etc. Conţinuturile discuţiilor nu au fost prestabilite, acestea hotărându-se împreună cu participantele/participanţii în cadrul unei situaţii non –ierarhice, într-o atmosferă de lucru democratică. Fotografiile de documentare făcute în timpul acestor discuţii si a situaţiilor de lucru care s-au creat au fost folosite apoi pentru o apropriere simbolică a spaţiului oraşului, a unor locuri din Bucureşti care au o importanţă pentru o istorie alternativă a femeilor.

Un alt fel de a arăta necesitatea unei aproprieri a spaţiului oraşului, care e tot mai puţin al fiecăruia dintre noi, a fost intervenţia Spaţii eliberate temporar de Reni, unde o stradă cu vitrine încă goale din zona Lipscani (zona centrală în Bucureşti, aflată în plin proces de gentrificare) a fost marcată, pentru un răstimp foarte scurt, ca fiind un loc posibil pentru acţiuni, un loc deschis, cu adevărat public, un loc care propune ca o ipoteză posibilitatea de fi mai creativi şi mai liberi.

Performance-ul Poliphonic Orchestra a implicat muzicieni şi persoane care nu au nici o legătură cu muzica într-o „orchestră” care a creat un spaţiu democratic în care oameni care nu se cunosc lucrează împreună şi în care vocea fiecăruia e auzită.

Reni Hofmüller este artistă, muziciană, compozitoare şi activistă în domeniul folosirii noilor medii, tehnologiei şi a însemnătăţii politice a acestora. Reni Hofmüller trăieşte şi lucrează în Graz.

Appropriation as an artistic practice with political background – presentation

Important places for a history of women.

The discussions, presentations and performances that took place over four days included topics such as: the necessity to create some spaces free of the ideology of the profit, the importance of an attitude aware of the political significance of everyday gestures, the relation between gender and technology, the role of free software and open source in promoting the freedom of information, women as content producers in the field of culture and technology, etc. The contents of the discussions were not established in advance but they were decided together with the participants in a democratic, non- hierarchical situation.

The photo documentation realized during these discussions were used for a symbolical appropriation of the space of the city, of locations in Bucharest that have an importance for the alternative history of women.

Another way of showing the necessity of the appropriation of the public space, which belongs less and less to each of us was the street intervention Spaces temporarily freed by Reni. During these intervention a street with still empty window shops from Lipscani area (a central area of Bucharest in the process of gentrification) was marked for a vey short time as a possible space for action, an open place, truly public, a space that proposes as a hypothesis the possibility of being more creative and free.

The performance Poliphonic Orchestra involved musiciens and people who have nothing to do with music in an „orchestra” that created a democratic space in which people who don’t know each other are working together and the each separate voice can be heard.

Reni Hofmüller, based in Graz is an artist, musician, composer, performer, organizer and activist in the fields of (new) media technology usage and of their political importance in general, engaged in the development of contemporary art and convinced that thinking makes a difference.

Dear Reni,

Here there are a few ideas for places relevant for an alterative history of women. We hope you would find them interesting for you to use them for your virtual appropriations of space. Let us know what do you think:

The University for Political Sciences where the first gender studies department in Romania was founded in 1998.
The starting point for Gay Pride march in Bucharest, which was at its third edition this year and which always takes a lot of courage for its participants in the condition in which the big majority of Romanian society is strongly homophobic (it's a lot to talk about here, but we could do this when we meet).
AnA Centre for Feminist Analysis is the first organization that in the end of nineties publicly declared a feminist position.
A high school in Bucharest where in 2004 a girl called Roxana Iosif publicly declared in her graduation discourse (which is usually some formal appraisal of the school and teachers) the fact that the school system is constructed on unfairness, cheating and lies. Her courageous discourse had a great impact in the media at that time, leading to discussions about the problems of the educational system.
The headquarters of ACCEPT Association the first and most important organization that fights for LGBT rights.
An informal (and illegal :) pub called Punkoteca where the women who organize ladyfest in Romania are having their meetings.
A building that used to be called The Women House and that used to belong between the two world wars to the women movement associations.
A building called Ateneu, where important discourses of the first Romanian feminists from the beginning of XXth century where held.

Sportul nostru: aruncarea cu prejudecăţi

Centrul pentru Acţiune şi Responsabilitate în Educaţie (CARE), ce funcţionează în cadrul Colegiului Naţional George Coşbuc are scopul de a oferi elevilor, absolvenţilor, profesorilor un spaţiu pentru dialog, pentru dezvoltarea talentelor şi folosirea lor în sensul unei implicări comunitare.

Atelierele, realizat de catre membri CARE (elevi, absolvenţi, profesoarele Roxana Marin şi Mihaela Ghiţiu), au avut ca scop producerea unor situaţii în care cei implicaţi să se confrunte cu propriile prejudecăţi, situaţii foarte comice şi foarte serioase în acelaşi timp (improvizaţii, intervenţii pe stradă care au implicat trecătorii), care au atras atenţia, prin forma şi conţinutul lor, asupra necesităţii gândirii critice, asupra faptului că schimbarea poate veni din partea fiecăruia dintre noi şi asupra importanţei pe care o are un proces de educaţie democratic în care profesori şi elevi participă împreună, de pe aceeaşi poziţie.

Our favourite sport: throwing with prejudices

The Centre for Action and Responsibility in Education (CARE), operates on the premises of the National Bilingual College George Coşbuc and it was establish in order to provide students, graduated students and teachers with a space for dialog, opportunities for scholastic improvement, talent development and community involvement.

The workshop realized together with the members of CARE centre (students, graduated students and teachers Roxana Marin and Mihaela Ghitiu) aimed to produce a series of situations in which the ones involved could confront their own prejudices, very comical and in the same time very serious situations (improvisations, street interventions involving the passers by) which emphasized, through their form and content, the importance and necessity of critical thinking, the fact that each of us can make a difference and the importance of a democratical education system, an educational system to which pupils and teachers participate from equal positions.

Şcolile publice din România: instrumentele Bisericii pentru perpetuarea discriminării de gen – prezentare susţinută de Emil Moise.

Prezentarea cu titlul „Şcolile publice din România: instrumentele Bisericii pentru perpetuarea discriminării de gen”, susţinută de Emil Moise, a avut ca subiect modul în care, prin predarea confesională a disciplinei Religie în şcolile publice, dar şi prin acţiunile colaterale ce decurg din acest fapt se transmit şi astfel se perpetuează relaţiile de putere în general, relaţiile de putere cu conţinut de gen, în special.

Emil Moise este activist şi profesor de discipline socio-umane. Are ca domenii de interes: cultură şi atitudine civică, etică aplicată, drepturile fiinţei umane, teoria deciziei sociale, promovarea toleranţei şi a respectului faţă de fiinţa umană şi mediul înconjurător.

Public schools in Romania: instruments of the Church for perpetuating gender discrimination- presentation by Emil Moise.

The presentation entitled ”Public schools in Romania: instruments of the Church for perpetuating gender discrimination” by Emil Moise, discussed how, with the aid of the confessional teaching of religion in public schools and also with the aid of the collateral actions which rise from this fact, power relations in general and gender power relation in particular are transmitted and perpetuated.

Emil Moise is an activist and a socio-humanist science teacher. His fields of interest are: culture and civic attitude, applied ethics, human rights, the theory of social decision, the promoting of tolerance and of respect towards all human beings and towards nature.

Ofensiva generozităţii – discuţii şi prezentări. Proiect invitat – Centrul Comunitar Rahova-Uranus – arhitecta Ruxandra Antal.

Ofensiva Generozităţii este un grup de artişti şi voluntari care lucrează cu comunitatea din zona Uranus-Rahova în cadrul proiectul „Construieşte-ţi comunitatea”, un proiect de artă comunitară şi de implicare socială. Atelierele şi discuţiile propuse de către grupul Ofensiva Generozităţii s-au bazat pe prezentarea unor filme documentare în care oameni din zonă vorbesc despre viaţa lor şi despre efectele gentrificării, a documentaţiei unor piese de teatru scrise şi jucate împreună cu oamenii din cartier, a documentaţiei reamenajării unui parc din zonă şi a înfiinţării unui „colţ al vorbitorului” unde oamenii pot sa vorbească despre problemele lor. A fost prezentată, de asemenea o propunere de proiect pentru un centru comunitar realizată de către arhitecta Ruxandra Antal. Împreună cu elevi şi absolvenţi activi în cadrul centrului CARE, membrii grupului Ofensiva Generozităţii au condus un atelier despre realizarea unor hărţi personale.

Ofensiva Generozităţii is a group of artists and volunteers working with the community from Uranus-Rahova neighbourhood in Bucharest, part of a project called “Build your community”, a communitarian art and social involvement project. The workshops and the discussions proposed by Ofensiva Generozităţii were based on: screenings of documentaries featuring locals talking about their everyday lives and about the effects of gentrification on their community; presentation of video documentation of theatre plays written and performed together with the people from the neighbourhood; presentation of documentation material about the reconditioning of a park from the area and the organization of a “speaker’s corner” where people from the area could talk about their daily problems; presentation of a project for a community centre designed by the architect Ruxandra Antal. Together with the members of CARE centre, the members of Ofensiva Generozităţii group organized a workshop about how to make personal maps.

Prezentarea „Construcţia identităţii marţiale masculine pe modulul maturitate/imaturitate în România”, susţinută de către Ştefan Tiron a adresat întrebarea dacă imaginea bărbatului de dinainte de 1989, ajuns micul luptător, sempai, antrenor, maestru, este întotdeauna legată de un anume model de masculinitate antrenată la perfecţiune în mijlocul naturii sau în mijlocul sufrageriei. O masculinitate plasată într-o natură aflată la marginea drumului, lângă picnic, sau alături de staţiunile balneoclimaterice. Modelele de bărbaţi (bruzli, cichicen, dudikof, arnold) erau afişate pe pereţi sau studiate direct din filmele de arte marţiale piratate. Am urmărit o succesiune de astfel de modele printr-o proiecţie de poze şi un film cu „lupte”.

Ştefan Tiron este curator şi conform descrierii sale „paranoia double agent, information dealer, dirty data miner, info broker, shady somatic recipient and damaged cortical data retriever.”

The presentation “The construction of the masculine martial identity on the module maturity/immaturity in Romania” by Stefan Tiron questioned if the image of the man before 1989, the man as the little warrior, the sempai, the coach, the master is always connected to a certain model of masculinity trained to perfection in the middle of nature or in the middle of the living room. A masculinity placed on the side of the road, next to the picnic or next to the health resorts. Models of men (bruce li, chucky chen, arnold) were posted on walls or studied directly from the pirated martial arts movies. We saw a succession of such models in a projection of images and in an action movie.

Stefan Tiron is a curator and, according to his description “a paranoia double agent, information dealer, dirty data miner, info broker, shady somatic recipient and damaged cortical data retriever.”

Iniţiativa One Laptop Per Child in Romania – prezentare şi discuţii. Liviu Pop.

Prezentarea „Iniţiativa One Laptop Per Child în România” s-a referit la proiectul OLPC iniţiat de Nicolas Negroponte care propune o alternativă educaţională revoluţionară destinată ţărilor din lumea a treia, dar nu numai. Chiar dacă laptopul proiectat de către reprezentantul MIT pare modest ca şi caracteristici tehnice în comparaţie cu standardele tehnologiilor informaţionale de ultima oră, ar putea reprezenta o îmbunătăţire radicală a sistemului educaţional românesc. Povestea acceptării iniţiale şi a îngropării ulterioare a proiectului de către politicienii români nu ar trebui să fie ultimul capitol al OLPC-ului în România, ci începutul unei dezbateri serioase despre modernizarea reală a educaţiei în România.

Liviu Pop este cercetător în arheologie media, cultura analogică şi digitală, digitalizarea arhivelor şi producţie media independentă.

The One Laptop Per Child in Romania initiative– presentations and discussions. Liviu Pop.

The presentation “The One Laptop Per Child in Romania initiative” referred to the OLPC project initiated by Nicolas Negroponte, project that proposes a revolutionary educational alternative, destined for the third world countries but not exclusively. Even if the laptop designed by the MIT representative seems modest compared to the technical standards of the latest information technologies, still it could represent a radical improvement of the Romanian education system. The story of the initial agreement and its ultimate demise by Romanian politicians shouldn’t be the last chapter of OLPC project in this country, but rather the beginning of a serious debate about a real modernization of the education system in Romania.

Ce mai fac eroii noştri? – prezentare şi discuţii. Cristian Cercel.

Prezentarea „Ce mai fac eroii noştri?” a fost susţinută de Cristian Cercel.

În timpul naţional-comunismului promovat de Ceauşescu, manualele şcolare (de istorie şi literatură română mai cu seamă) prezentau o naraţiune eroizată a istoriei românilor (n.b.: istoria era a românilor, şi nu a României). Fără existenţa unor alternative autentice, monopolul producerii şi reproducerii de identitate se afla în mâinile Partidului, unul dintre canalele cele mai importante prin care o identitate naţională departe de a fi all-inclusive era propagată fiind sistemul educaţional. Care este însă situaţia acum, după ce manualele alternative au devenit o realitate cotidiană pentru elevii de liceu? Cum o mai duc acum vajnicii noştri eroi naţionali? Cât de diferită este actuala „naraţiune română” faţă de cea din epoca naţional-comunistă?

Cristian Cercel este traducător, absolvent al departamentului de Studii Europene din cadrul Facultăţii de Litere a Universităţii Bucureşti, Master of Arts in Nationalism Studies, la Central European University, Budapesta.

How are our heroes now? – presentation and discussion. Cristian Cercel.

The presentation “How are our heroes now?” was made by Cristian Cercel. During the national-communism promoted by Ceausescu, textbooks (History and Romanian literature in particular) were presenting a heroic narrative of the history of the Romanians (n.b.: the history was of the Romanians and not of Romania). Without the existence of an authentic alternative, the monopoly for the production and the reproduction of identity was in the hands of the Communist Party, the education system was one of the main channels through which a national identity, far from being a comprehensive one, was propagated. What is the situation now, when the alternative textbooks are an everyday reality for the high school pupils? What are our brave national heroes doing now? How different is the present “Romanian narrative” compared to the one from the national-communist period?

Cristian Cercel graduated in European Studies from the Literature department of Bucharest University and has a Master of Arts in Nationalism Studies from the Central European University, Budapest. He works as a translator.

Nu putem vorbi despre comunism la colţ de stradă este un film despre memorie, realizat de Valeriu Antonovici, care surprinde perspective diferite ale raportării la experienţa comunismului, pornind de la discursurile oficiale, până la opiniile simpatizanţilor fostului PCR, la părerile oamenilor aleşi absolut aleatoriu, în parc, pe stradă, la metrou şi până la comentariile unor sociologi, antropologi, politologi, perspective care lasă loc unei analize mai nuanţate.

Vizionarea filmului a fost urmată de discuţii libere în prezenţa autorului.

You cannot speak about communism on a street corner is a film about memory realized by Valeriu Antonovic, a film that reflects on the different perspectives of relating to the communist experience, from the official discourses to the opinions of sympathizers of the former communist party, from the ideas of randomly chosen people on the streets, in parks, on the subway to the comments of sociologists, anthropologists, and political scientists. All these different points of view make place for a more nuanced analyses of the communist past.

The screening was followed by an informal discussion with the author.

Prezentarea istoriei şi activităţii grupului de video activism ak kraak din Berlin în contextul mişcării anarhiste din Germania şi internaţionale a cuprins idei despre strategii de auto-organizare, despre conceptul de do it yourself, despre o raportare critică la filmul documentar, diferită de cea mainstream corporatistă, despre feluri de a lucra împreună. A fost proiectată o selecţie de filme din arhiva ak kraak realizate în perioada 1990-2007 şi a putut fi consultată o arhivă cu postere şi materiale informative despre activitatea grupului.

Katharina Koch, Marie Du Vinage, Florian Hülsey and Elizabeth Grenier presented “ak kraak - videoactivism and critical documenting in the frame of activists’ movement in Berlin and Germany since1989”. The presentation of the history and activity of the ak kraak group from Berlin in the context of the German and international anarchist movement discussed ideas related to strategies of self-organization, to the concept of “do it yourself”, to the critical way of dealing with documentary/ documentary filmmaking (subjective perspectives, self-reflected access, ways of working together/relationship: filmmakers-protagonists, other ways of documentary work then the corporate media style, etc). A selection of films from the ak kraak archive, films realized between 1990 and 2007, was showed in a video lounge. An archive of posters and info material about the group was also available.

Prezentare Indymedia România.

„Indymedia adună laolaltă grupări de media şi jurnalişti independenţi pentru a prezenta ştirile în stil grassroots, ne-comercial. Indymedia e un canal democratic de media pentru crearea unor descrieri radicale ale realităţii, redate cu acurateţe cât şi cu pasiune.” (indymedia.org)
Prezentarea s-a referit la media independentă ca alternativă la acceptarea pasivă a unei „obiectivităţi jurnalistice” venite de sus în jos şi aliniate la ideologii dominante, adică la dinamica pe care se bazează interacţiunea tradiţională a publicului cu mass-media comercială. S-au pus în discuţie punctele din misiunea site-ului Indymedia România: crearea unei platforme pentru promovarea justiţiei sociale, libertăţii de expresie şi a libertăţii informaţiei, pentru democratizarea tehnologiei şi a expertizei, spargerea monopolului media şi dezvoltarea unei „prese alternative”, promovarea principiului do it yourself, construirea de reţele şi cooperarea.

Presentation by Indymedia Romania.

“Indymedia brings together groups of media and independent journalists in order to present news in a grassroots, non-commercial manner. Indymedia is a democratic channel for the creation of a radical description of reality, rendered with accuracy but also with passion.” (indymedia.org)

The presentation discussed the potential of independent media as an alternative to the passive acceptance of a predominant “journalistic objectivity” subjected to dominant ideologies, a dynamics on which the traditional interaction of publics with mainstream commercial media is based on. The mission of the Indymedia Romania, as listed on their website, was discussed: creating a platform for promoting social justice, freedom of expression and information, for democratization of technology and expertise, for breaking the monopoly of the media and for constructing an “alternative press”, for promoting the “do it yourself” principle, for constructing networks and for cooperating.

„Activismul în viaţa publică românească” a fost o masă rotundă despre înţelesurile activismului în politică, mass-media, mediul academic, mediul artistic, societatea civică şi comunităţile sociale alternative. S-a pus problema sensului activismului din diverse puncte de vedere şi carenţele pe care uzitarea şi suprauzitarea acestui termen le poate avea în contextul românesc, mai ales în mass-media.

Marius Stoica a studiat filozofia la Universitatea Babeş Bolyai din Cluj Napoca şi e membru în grupul D Media din 2004. Este preocupat de problemele pe care atitudinea activistă le ridică (globalizarea, poluarea, drepturile omului, etc.) şi de cultura contemporană alternativă (mişcarea open source, cultura psihedelică, post-left anarhism, etc.).

Activism in Romanian public life. Panel discussion moderated by Marius Stoica.

“Activism in the Romanian public life” took the form of a panel discussion about the meanings of the term of “activism” in politics, mass media, in academic and artistic circles, in the civic society and in the alternative social communities. We discussed the sense of activism from multiple points of view and also we will reflect on the shortcomings that the usage - and over usage - of the term can cause in the Romanian context, especially in the mass-media.

Marius Stoica studied philosophy at the Babeş Bolyai University in Cluj and since 2004 is a member of D Media group. He is concerned with the problems that an activist attitude addresses (globalisation, pollution, human rights, etc) and with the alternative contemporary culture (the open source movement, the psychedelic culture, post-left anarchism, etc).

The three days of discussions and workshops that took place in collaboration with Spaţiul Public Bucureşti | Public Art Bucharest 2007 project refered to topics such as: the presence of women in the public sphere, queer identities, activism against gender violence, motherhood and its social and political implications, women as content makers on the internet, video activism and gender identities, etc.
